The 2024 National Carer Survey found that 53.7% of carers experienced high to very high psychological distress — up from 48% in 2020. Australia has over 2.65 million unpaid carers and the toll is significant.
The Real Cost
Primary carers lose an average of $175,000 in superannuation and $392,500 in lifetime earnings by age 67. More than half report no time for themselves on a typical day. Of all support services measured, respite was associated with the largest improvement in carer wellbeing.
What the NDIS Offers
The NDIS funds respite through Short Term Accommodation (STA) — up to 28 days per year of funded accommodation and support while carers take a break. Options include weekend stays at respite facilities, in-home overnight support, and day programs.
Why Carers Do Not Use It
Only 19.7% of carers reported good access to overnight respite in 2024. Many feel guilty or assume it is not available. Respite is not a luxury — it protects the sustainability of the care arrangement for everyone.
How to Get It
Raise respite explicitly at the planning meeting and have your GP document the carer needs. Reach out to Care By Carers to discuss your options.
