SIL, SDA, and Independent Living: Your 2025 NDIS Housing Guide

March 12, 2025 • cbcadmin • 2 min read

Home and living supports are among the most misunderstood areas of the NDIS. Here is a clear breakdown of what is available in 2025.

The Four Types of Support

  • Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) — Funding for purpose-built housing for participants with extreme functional impairment. Covers housing costs only.
  • Supported Independent Living (SIL) — Funding for support workers helping you in your home with daily tasks. Does not cover rent, food, or utilities.
  • Individual Living Options (ILO) — Flexible, co-designed arrangements for living with a host, flatmate, or in a supported shared household.
  • Home Modifications — Funding for physical changes like ramps, grab rails, and accessible bathrooms.

SDA vs SIL: The Key Difference

SDA is the building; SIL is the people supporting you inside it. You do not need to live in SDA to receive SIL.

Mandatory Registration From July 2026

From 1 July 2026, all SIL providers must be registered with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission. Use the Digital Compliance Register to check your current provider now.

Getting SIL Approved

SIL approval needs a formal allied health assessment, detailed documentation of your support requirements, and a Support Coordinator to advocate at your planning meeting.
