With the NDIS workforce needing approximately 353,000 workers and annual turnover three times the national average, finding the right support worker is one of the most important decisions a participant can make.
1. Genuine Reliability
Cancelled shifts and late arrivals undermine trust and the routines participants depend on. Ask providers about rostering consistency, cancellation rates, and backup arrangements.
2. Active Listening and Communication
Research shows participants value attitude, reliability, and communication above formal qualifications. A great support worker listens to what you want — not what they assume you need.
3. Respect for Your Choices and Privacy
Person-centred support means the participant leads. A great support worker empowers your decisions and maintains strict confidentiality about your health, home, and personal life.
4. Proper Training
All NDIS workers should have completed the NDIS Commission Worker Orientation Module at minimum. Look for Certificate III in Individual Support, First Aid, and relevant specialist training.
5. Cultural Awareness
The 2025 National Disability Workforce Strategy places significant emphasis on cultural competency as a core standard. A worker who respects your cultural background provides meaningfully better care.
